Assimétrico | in progress

Symmetric. Asymmetric. Louder. Lower. High. Stacatto. Biiiiiigggggg. Small. Leggato.

What kind of dynamics the musicians have within their bodies? And what kind of instruments dancers use? What kind of spatiality they occupy together?

Inspired in David Byrne’s choreographies for “Stop Making Sense”, a 1984 film/documentary directed by Jonathan Demme, and in particular “American Utopia”, a 2020 Spike Lee documentary of David Byrne’s Broadway show with the same title, choreographed in collaboration with Annie B. Parson, where dancers and musicians become indistinct in a choreographed ensemble, “Asymmetric” intends to deconstruct the spaces of the orchestra pit and the stage, of the musician and the dancer, of the body and the instruments, of the sound and the movement. The force is in the group and in its collective behavior. In her last artistic creations and collaborations, Beatriz Valentim has been working towards original music compositions that are, most of the times, played alive. The desire to set the musicians on stage in a more vibrant and choreographed way has been growing and, after a specific project where she was defied to work with a music composer to create a small piece, she discovered that this was a path that she wants to follow: to choreograph dancers from musicians’ movements and to invite a composer to compose for musicians inspired in the dancers’ musicality and rhythm.
